BIRDS Back to Baba's Pets

Baby Parrots
Baba once brought three baby parrots to the women mandali on Meherabad Hill. He gave one to Mehera, one to Mani and one to Khorshed. Then he fed each baby bird. The birds ate so much they were groaning with pain. Baba said they needed to walk to help them digest their food so they wouldn't get a bellyache. He told Mehera, Mani and Khorshed to make them walk, which wasn't so easy! So Baba nudged them along the floor until they had walked from one end of the room and back. You can imagine how funny these pink little birds with no feathers looked as Baba guided them and their full bellies across the floor!

Mynah Bird
Baba was once given a Mynah Bird as a gift. This bird really loved music and when Mani would play her sitar the bird would gracefully hop from leg to leg in time with the music. Baba found this very amusing. This bird could also talk and make the noise of a baby crying or an old man with a raspy cough. Mehera taught the Mynah to say "Baba, darling." When the bird died he was saying "Baba, dah. . ." with his last breath, which was a great blessing to his spirit.

Mittu
Mittu was a parrot that Baba was very fond of. She was very mischievous and often surprised people by chewing up things. She once found a way to break out of her cage and proudly perched on top of it on the verandah. Later she flew down into the garden and a mongoose caught hold of her. Luckily Mittu had time to squawk for help and the women ran out and scared the mongoose off. Mittu was in shock and was calmed down by the women mandali.

Moti
Moti was a peacock whom Elizabeth saw one day in the market in Bangalore. Baba allowed Elizabeth to bring Moti back to the ashram. Moti loved to dance in full plumage, and in certain months he would give "love calls." He would dance at any opportunity and his dances were especially breathtaking with the sunlight behind him. He was not shy and loved to have people scratch his neck gently.

White Dove
During Baba's time in the Manzil-e-Meem ashram, a white dove once flew into the compound. Baba explained that this dove was sent to Baba from the Perfect Master, Hazrat Babajan, carrying a very important message. Because of the import of the message the bird became sick and despite Baba staying up all night nursing the bird, it died. Baba gave it a regal funeral, covered its grave with flowers and even wrote a poem about the bird.
