isn’t he enough?

Ann Conlon

I’ve talked about this before, the idea that Meher Baba may not be enough for some people. I bring it up again because it keeps on being a question.

It repeatedly becomes a question when supposed followers of Meher Baba slam on the brakes, so to speak, because they just caught sight of someone else who (“Oh, goody!”) might make at least a workable idol of the moment. Lord knows, for some people, there can never be too many of them.

But for all of us, I think the day does come when we know for sure that not only is Meher Baba enough, but that he has to be, because there’s really no other choice. So why, before we get to that point, do we spend so much time trying to avoid the inevitable? I think the reasons are varied and changeable. And sometimes it just depends on those old human moods. We can swing from conviction in the morning that He is absolutely enough, to casting around for alternatives at night, desperately trying to hedge our bets. Is that just human nature? Probably.

Or maybe some of us are still very young, not quite ready for commitment, especially if it means getting serious about this journey called the spiritual path. God forbid our lives should be tinged with anything but fun! Of course, we do get the “fun” parts and Baba enjoys those moments, too. But there does come a time when Baba gets serious with us and expects us to treat the journey with the seriousness it deserves. I remember a point in my own life, a time of big change, when one of the mandali said to me: “You’ve taken care of all these other duties, but Baba is a jealous lover and now he wants your attention on him.”

If we’ve been paying attention, then each of us will recognize that moment when it arrives. If we haven’t paid attention, then bad luck, we’ll probably miss it. A thoroughly unpleasant and very sad thought. So we had better make sure our antennae are always up, always working, and always turned his way.
